Her mother’s phone lights up in her hand, but it quickly becomes obvious that her mother is no longer alive. This is our heroine, whose school uniform’s name tag tells us is CHOI EUN-SEOL ( Shin Se-kyung). On a foggy night, a teenage girl texts her mother that she’ll be home soon and to heat up some water for ramyun. I’m amused by the lead characters, and at the same time drawn in by their dramatic stories, and I can’t wait to see more. So far it manages to change tone from serious to funny and back again in a way that surprises the viewer, and enhances the two very different “feels” without making either seem out of place. For a show that’s about two people whose lives were irrevocably changed by a serial murderer, Girl Who Sees Smells offers enough smart and (hilariously timed) unexpected humor to give it a nice balance. Parcel Post Tracked was expensive at $8.00, but may have included a handling charge and taken into account the high quality gift box it came in.171 ApJanuGirl Who Sees Smells: Episode 1 by LollyPip Available in store and via telephone order from Passion for Paper in Auckland. I'm still going to try and track down some Papier d'Arménie which are cheaper, and see how they compare.Ĭarta d'Armenia comes in a box with 18 pieces of scented paper for $39.00. There's something very comforting and spiritually organic about them, and I think they would make a fabulous gift for a perfume lover who likes incense, but isn't so keen on the smoke. I do love them though and will always keep some on hand for when the mood strikes me. I would be more happy paying perhaps $24.95 I also have a sneaking suspicion I may have received an older box, so would be interested to smell a fresh box and compare the difference. While I am pleased with them, I did think they could have been a little more fragrant and they are on the steep side when it comes to price. You want to know what I did with it? I stuck my finger in it and smeared it on my wrist like perfume.Yep that just happened. Once it had burned down, it left a trace of some kind of sticky yellow substance that looked like burnished honey. The scent lingered for a couple of hours and did a good job of purifying the stale air without making it smell like my credit card statement just caught on fire. ![]() I walked the dish through the house like a priestess, wafting the smoke into each room and then left the rest of it it burn itself down, which took no more than 5 minutes. It didnt take long for wisps of sweetly scented smoke to curl their way up into the air and down my hallway. It wasn't as strong as I expected, but it was highly evocative and reminded me somewhat of Carthusia's Ligea perfume minus the citrus.įollowing Judith's instructions, I took a piece of paper and folded it into a concertina (about 5 folds) and lit it up, blew out the flame and placed it on a tempered glass dish to burn down. The slightly medicinal frankincense and smoky myrrh appeared translucent and ghost-like, with a lingering of sweet benzoin in there too. They are porous and fibrous, almost felt-like which provides ample opportunity for the resinous liquid they are soaked in, to penetrate.Īt first sniff what came through was old, sweet, thick paged books and long ago burned incense that has crept into the bindings. These papers are thicker than standard photocopy paper and are more along the thickness of cartridge paper. ![]() The little red box they come in, is about the size of a pack of Big Red chewing gum and has a little flip top lid that contains 18 burning papers. So, this morning they arrived and I couldn't wait to rip through the gorgeous packaging to get into them. After some digging around, I was able to track down some Carta d'Armenia at Passion for Paper in Auckland and placed my order over the phone with the lovely Judith, who was very helpful. I was originally looking for Papier d'Arménie but couldn't find a supplier in NZ and was just about to give up when I came across a review that mentioned Santa Maria Novella's Carta d'Armenia that was pretty much the same thing, but purported to be stronger smelling. They are typically scented with Benzoin and/or Frankincense and Myrrh and are used by folding them into a concertina, lighting the paper and blowing the flame out to burn on a heatproof dish. Carta d'Armenia (also known as Armenian Burning Paper) is my favourite new thing and I simply had to take some photos and tell you all about them.Īrmenian Burning Papers have been around since the 16th century and are still used today as air purifiers, to remove odours such as dampness, mold, rooms of the sick and kitchen odours. Being a lover of ALL the smelly things, its no surprise that my nose rooted out this quaint little scented curiosity from Santa Maria Novella.
